Acknowledgments

I would like to acknowledge the generous assistance of Te Papa, in particular the Visitor and Market Research staff, as well as the staff at INAH, especially Priscila Medina and Leticia Pérez. I am also most grateful to all the interviewees, and to Victoria University of Wellington for the funding that has made this project possible. Finally, I thank the editors for their comments and suggestions, which have greatly helped in revising the chapter.

Notes

.For examples, see Hansen (1984), Stevenson Day (1994), McLeod O’Reilly (2005), Casaleiro (1996) and Rubenstein, Paradis, and Munro (1993).

.Aotearoa is the Māori name for New Zealand.

.These studies are being conducted by two transnational research teams. The author is a member of both teams. Co-researchers for the E Tū Ake project are Gaëlle Crenn (France), Natacha Gagné (Canada), and Mélanie Roustan (France). The co-researcher on the Aztec project is Leticia Pérez (Mexico).

.See, for example, Macdonald (1998), Witcomb (2003), Phillips (2005), Peers and Brown (2003), Mason (2006), and Shelton (2006).

.A brief overview of this background is given here. For a fuller historical and contemporary analysis, see McCarthy (2007, 2011) and Schorch and Hakiwai (2014).

.Te Papa’s Mana Taonga Principle, cited in Schorch and Hakiwai (2014).

.With the exception of the interpreter, who is New Zealand European.

.New Zealanders of European descent.

.Discovery Centres are interactive spaces for children and families within Te Papa.

.Alexander von Humboldt coined the word Aztecs in the early nineteenth century, and this is the name by which they have become most widely known. However, the Aztecs called themselves the “Mexica” (Keen 1971).

.None of the Australasian museums had a Mesoamerican specialist on staff to assist with the development of the exhibition content. Attempts were made to gain assistance from a university-based scholar in Australia, but this ultimately proved unsuccessful. Instead, Townsend worked from the essay provided by Barrera and other well-established sources, then relied on INAH staff checking the text in Mexico to ensure its accuracy.

.From the original exhibition Design Document for Peopling of New Zealand, quoted in Fitzgerald (2009: 200).

.Similar issues arose in relation to the marketing images first developed by Tokyo National Museum for Mauri Ora, and the images proposed for E TÅ« Ake by Quai Branly. These examples suggest that marketing is perhaps one of the more contested areas of touring exhibitions in terms of agreeing on images that are compelling and resonant for host country audiences, while simultaneously being sensitive to the culture and politics of the country of origin. These issues will be further investigated as the study progresses.

.See Alonso (2004) and Liffman (2007) for helpful discussions of national identity, Indigenous representation, and display strategies at the MNA.
